Laguna Beach is the Bomb!
My best summer vacation has happened over and over again for twenty years. As I have said before when I married Alyson I got wonderful gifts with purchase. Not only did I get Kelli and Eddie but I got a great family as well. Alyson Dean Emery Zahn’s father is Dean Edgerton Jr. By the way, Kelli Dean Emery is named after him as well, how cool is that!
Dean was motivated after Kelli was born to start a summer vacation tradition. He decided on Laguna Beach and did exhaustive research to find the best resort possible to take the family every year for a week long summer vacation. The spot he picked was Vacation Village, now Pacific Edge Resort. It truly was a brilliant idea and I lucked into two decades of week long summer vacations with the family. What a kick to think back to remember how the dynamics changed as Kelli and Eddie grew up. From not sure of the water to enjoying the watering holes!

Landsailing & Camping
My best summer vacation was a trip with the Zahn family to a Southern California dry lake bed for an adventure of camping under the stars. Of course we also enjoyed many hours of zipping around the dry lake bed on landsailers. These yachts soar over the dry lake as the wind picks up mid-day. Of course no camping trip would be complete without star-lit campfire relaxation. The trip that stands out to me is the summer my mother and sister were able to join in the experience. They live in Tennessee and Florida respectively so a dry lake with landsailers was unlike anything they had seen before. It was great to have them arrive to the lake ready to hop in a yacht for a ride.

Riverfront Cabin & Wakeboarding
Every year for their summer vacations, a group of families from around Rossmoor drive up to the Sacramento Delta and rent out cabins right on the water. My family, unfortunately, is not one of those that goes annually, but, fortunately, my best friends’ family, the Mais family, does go annually. So two of the past few years I’ve had the pleasure of driving up and staying with them, and I can say these two experiences have granted me some of my fondest memories to date. The cabins were not luxurious (to say the least) but rather it was the people that made the experiences so amazing. Without my family, I was immediately an outsider, but the other families welcomed me, let me use their equipment, ride on their boats, and, most importantly, eat their delicious food. I managed to be the worst one at wakeboarding and not the best at tubing, yet this didn’t stop me from having the best week of my life. Small trips like this may not provide the most extravagant hotels, scenery, or food, but, with the right group of people, they can provide some of the best memories of your life.
